Temples Suspended in Stone

We arrived in Datong by train this morning, and after making our way to the Hanging Temple, I understood why this place is legendary. Perched impossibly on a cliff face above a narrow gorge, the temple seems to defy gravity itself—wooden structures clinging to the rock as if by sheer will. The sight of it took my breath away: red pillars and golden roofs nestled into the stone, with nothing but air beneath them.

Walking through the narrow corridors and climbing the steep staircases inside felt like navigating the veins of the mountain itself. Every step required care; every doorway framed a new view of the gorge below. The temple houses statues of Buddhist, Taoist, and Confucian figures—a rare blend of three religions coexisting in one sacred space.

What struck me most was the profound sense of isolation and tranquility up there, suspended between earth and sky. The effort required to build and maintain this place, the devotion it represents—it's almost incomprehensible. Standing on those wooden platforms, feeling the wind funnelling through the gorge, I felt genuinely moved.
